After helping to prevent an economic collapse, the TARP (TARP) expires on schedule October. 3. It turns out that the bailout cost only a fraction of what the right wing has been saying . However, the unprecedented nature of TARP alarmed opponents of so-called large government and turned “bailout” into a Republican code word intended to demonize the administration’s fiscal policies . Wall Street, Detroit automakers and the insurance industry can thank Troubled Asset Relief Program for their survival, but most of America feels left out by government efforts to revive the economy, which has left Democrats absorbing harsh criticism for a bailout enacted during the Bush era.
What Troubled Asset Relief Program will cost
TARP will stop extending loans Sunday, but it will continue to collect dividends and repayments. The Treasury Department was given $700 billion by congress to stop the economy collapsing about 2 years ago, reports Fortune at CNN. Troubled Asset Relief Program’s bill is less than anyone thought it would be when Wall Street is working on getting back into shape and also the economy is working at healing. According to the Treasury, the government only lent $386 billion of the fund. Now the cash is slowly going back to the government. The rates are higher than expected too. Tim Geithner, as Treasury Secretary, explained that TARP was really only going to cost $50 billion at most.
TARP not reacting as expected
The financial system needed saving from the government that came only partly through the Troubled Asset Relief Program , reports the Washington Post. The mortgage and housing market was something the Treasury and Federal Reserve thought needed saving. They spent over $1.5 trillion trying to help this. The bailouts have also embedded the federal government deeply to the private sector. A socialist takeover is what extremists think will happen soon because of the economic help being done. Most are against the government at present due to this. That means that midterm elections aren’t looking so good for all of those individuals who voted for TARP.
The garbled politics of TARP
Democrats are fighting for to show that it is not that awful of a program. Unfortunately, the Bush administration started this program really hurting Democrats. ABC News reports that Republicans are hoping to take advantage of TARP’s unpopularity by linking Democrats and Obama to “bailout,” which has become the dirtiest term in issues. There was a conference on August 10 where Republicans spoke about a bill Democrats are attempting to pass giving $26 billion to a state fiscal aid package. They used the term bailout about 7 times to get the point across. Despite the fact that the program is already expired, the “Pledge to America” from Republicans states the program could be ended permanently.
