Nap Nanny sleepers recalled after death

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and business Baby Matters have recalled the first generation of Nap Nanny products. One death has been attributed to a Nap Nanny, though the product was being used incorrectly. Anybody who has a first generation Nap Nanny can get $80 off the purchase of a second generation product.

The Nap Nanny product

A foam pillow intended to help fussy babies sleep, the Nap Nanny is made and distributed by the Baby Matters company. Molded foam and a three-point harness re-create the shape and size of a car seat. When the harness is used incorrectly, it doesn’t hold the baby in place. D-rings don’t hold the Velcro harness in place in first generation products. Only those without the D-ring are included in the recall.

Reacting to the Nap Nanny recall

If you do have a Nap Nanny, your response to the recall depends on which product you have. If you purchased your Nap Nanny between January 2009 and July 2010, you most likely have a first-generation product. Call Baby Matters at 888-240-4282 to get a coupon for 61 percent off the purchase price of a new Nap Nanny. If your Nap Nanny has D-rings, you need to watch the video on the Baby Matters website before using it again.

Questions about the effectiveness of the CPSC

The recall of Nap Nanny sleeping pads is just the latest in a long line of baby-product recalls. Drop side cribs and pacifiers have also been recalled for safety hazards just this year. In 2008, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which asked for standards to be set for baby gear. Creating standards has been a long process, and only baby walkers and bath seats have complete standards. You will find plans for standards for every little thing else, including cribs. The CPSC has not much staff or funding, but a lot of responsibility.
